Race & Racism: Conversing Candidly with Heart – November 11, 2020

October 14, 2020 by ODN Oregon

Are you ready for a vibrant, thoughtful discussion about race and racism?

We invite you to join an interactive dialogue! A diverse, dynamic panel of local leaders and experts will talk about their navigation in the world of race and racism. As participants, we will also break into small groups to share insights, questions, lessons learned and set the stage for ongoing individual, organizational and community engagement on race and antiracism.

In response to the death of George Floyd, Oregon OD Network issued a Statement on Calls for Racial Justice. OODN also chose to prioritize awareness, appreciation and meaningful action about race equity in our community outreach, strategic planning, programming and pro bono work.

Future in depth conversations will explore how our Network, both as individual members and in a Community of Practice, might experience and react to race and racism. Attention will focus on healing racial divides, building trust with communities of color and improving culturally adept communication and behavior with diverse populations.

What HR Doesn’t Get About OD – October 14, 2020

September 3, 2020 by ODN Oregon

Organization development (OD) practitioners are taught methods involving transformational change, which is brought about by cutting-edge OD practices such as appreciative inquiry, future search, Theory U, and deliberately developmental organizations (DDOs). Yet, many internal and external practitioners don’t have the chance to do enterprise-level and transformational work because of constraints imposed by organizations and clients.

Many clients and HR professionals see OD as just another HR service. Internal OD staff may be housed in HR departments; external consultants’ contracts are often brokered by HR. Some HR staff fashion themselves as OD consultants but have little or no training, mentoring or supervision. These confusions dilute the definition of OD and degrade the promise and results of OD work.

One of the existential threats to our discipline is that people outside it are redefining it, limiting its scope, and shortchanging it. In this interactive session, we’ll explore the differences between “transactional and transformational OD” and how the distinction can help focus us and others on the immense possibilities of true OD.

About Eric Svaren
Growing the capacity of leaders and organizations has been the focus of Eric’s career for more than 25 years. As an independent practitioner, his clients include national and local non-profits, health care, higher education, companies, and government at all levels. Eric has also been an internal consultant—at Fred Hutch, Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, and the City of Seattle. He taught mid-career professionals for Cascade Executive Programs at the UW Evans School of Public Affairs. A scholar at heart, Eric is an insatiable learner and propagator of OD and maintains a vast archive of tools, models, and case studies.

MindShare – October 1, 2020

Our twice-monthly MindShare meetings provide participants a rich environment for sharing professional experiences and challenges. This gathering of seasoned consultants and seekers, internal and external helpers and managers forms the core of how we support each other in building our community of practice across change disciplines and career situations.

People trade ideas and learnings with each other as we focus on the challenges individuals bring to the table. Coaching, mentoring, introducing different perspectives and reframes, all play their role in making these gatherings exciting and beneficial to all who come.

At our September 17 MindShare, we talked about the resilience needed in this time of fires and terrible air quality, and how we find ways to hold onto hope. We touched on emotional intelligence and how naming the source of our anxieties sometimes helps when we feel things are beyond are our control.

Hearing each other’s stories and different voices energizes us and builds relationships that extend beyond the “room.” Please join us on the first and third Thursdays of each month. All are welcome!
