Confronting and Overcoming Racial Bias – April 10, 2019

February 18, 2019 by ODN Oregon

Confronting and Overcoming Racial Bias

Stereotypes. Micro-aggression. Cultural biases. More than buzz words, these patterns of thinking and behavior shape our interactions with others.

Each of us carry implicit biases we use to automatically categorize individuals and groups. These unconscious biases lead to us forming mental shortcuts or mindsets which can lead to subtle and corrosive work environments if not addressed.

Please join us for an assumption-challenging and engaging workshop led by Art Hendricks where we will learn about:

  • Defining unconscious bias
  • Examining the science of unconscious bias
  • Describing Types and Examples of unconscious bias
  • Uncovering the role of stereotypes in unconscious bias
  • Understanding insights on the implicit association test (IAT)
  • Identifying steps in minimizing individual unconscious bias
  • Outlining steps and strategies individuals can use to interrupt micro-aggressions and oppressive comments

You will leave armed with strategies to address unconscious bias in your workplace and community.

About the Speaker

Art “Bela” Hendricks has over twenty-five years of experience working in the field of diversity development, equity and inclusion. His practical, real world approach has championed these issues across the private, non-profit and public sectors alike. Currently, as the Equity and Inclusion Manager for Portland Parks and Recreation, he is responsible for developing culturally responsive programs and activities for communities of color, the immigrant and refugee communities as well as those living with disabilities. His engaging style and common-sense approach to these sensitive topics make his workshops relatable for everyone.

October 8, 2018 by ODN Oregon

Improving the Employee Experience: The “Visual” Approach to Retaining Good People

In today's highly competitive market, organizations want to retain top talent, yet traditional approaches tend to over-rely on verbal and written communications and fail to meet the mark. Today’s visual, systems-driven world demands a new approach. Join Bruce Hazen, co-author of Business Models for Teams, as he leads us through a highly interactive and engaging workshop on Improving the Employee Experience: The “Visual” Approach to Retaining Good People.

In this session, participants will learn how to visually depict work at three levels: the individual, team and enterprise, discover how other organizations have applied it, and then dive into a fun and hands-on opportunity to explore two levels of visual modeling. Attendees will leave equipped with the knowledge and tools needed to take this approach back to their workplace or clients.

About the Speaker
Bruce Hazen’s diverse professional background ranges from civil engineering to community health and includes degrees in Industrial and Labor Relations from Cornell University and a graduate degree in Clinical Psychology. This broad background set the stage for his successful coaching and consulting career. In 2014, Bruce wrote Answering The Three Career Questions, and as a career and management coach, he has guided leaders and their teams to personally tailor their answers for “The Three Career Questions”.In 2017, Bruce joined forces with Tim Clark to co-author a book entitled Business Models for Teams. They have led workshops in various parts of the U.S. and abroad, sharing the practices and principles outlined in their book.Bruce fundamentally believes that finding the right work gives rise to leading in that work and then ultimately to the work getting done by highly motivated, results-drive teams.Hazen also provides leadership training to teams, most recently delivering a four-part series of leadership seminars for all Oregon Health Sciences University Nurse Managers and Professional Practice Leaders.
