Polarity Thinking vs Problem Solving, May 8, 2019

April 10, 2019 by ODN Oregon

When we encounter a large complex problem, we develop a solution. The “solution” works well for a while, and then it doesn’t… We call these situations “wicked problems,” or dilemmas, where treating them as Either/Or choices doesn’t work over time.

Enter Polarity Thinking: Polarities are sets of opposites which can’t function well independently, because the two sides of a polarity are interdependent: The objective of Polarity Thinking is to get the best of both opposites while avoiding the limits of each.

In this highly participative session you will learn the main principles of Polarity Thinking and explore how to:

  • Distinguish between a problem to be solved and a polarity to be managed
  • Map the benefits of each side of a polarity and the downsides of each
  • Place yourself on a Polarity Map of a specific pair of values/poles
  • Develop action plans to keep you moving from the upside of one pole to the upside of the other while minimizing the pain and dysfunction of the downsides of each.

You will leave with a new set of lenses to use at home, at work, wherever you encounter Either/Or thinking that could benefit from Both/And approaches.

About the Presenter

Barry Johnson, inventor of Polarity Thinking, will present remotely via Zoom. In 1975, Barry created the first Polarity Map® and set of principles. Since then he has used Polarity Thinking with clients from all sectors around the globe to leverage polarities, AKA paradoxes, dilemmas, or tensions.

Helen Spector, OODN Board Member, will live-facilitate the presentation with Barry.

Confronting and Overcoming Racial Bias – April 10, 2019

February 18, 2019 by ODN Oregon

Confronting and Overcoming Racial Bias

Stereotypes. Micro-aggression. Cultural biases. More than buzz words, these patterns of thinking and behavior shape our interactions with others.

Each of us carry implicit biases we use to automatically categorize individuals and groups. These unconscious biases lead to us forming mental shortcuts or mindsets which can lead to subtle and corrosive work environments if not addressed.

Please join us for an assumption-challenging and engaging workshop led by Art Hendricks where we will learn about:

  • Defining unconscious bias
  • Examining the science of unconscious bias
  • Describing Types and Examples of unconscious bias
  • Uncovering the role of stereotypes in unconscious bias
  • Understanding insights on the implicit association test (IAT)
  • Identifying steps in minimizing individual unconscious bias
  • Outlining steps and strategies individuals can use to interrupt micro-aggressions and oppressive comments

You will leave armed with strategies to address unconscious bias in your workplace and community.

About the Speaker

Art “Bela” Hendricks has over twenty-five years of experience working in the field of diversity development, equity and inclusion. His practical, real world approach has championed these issues across the private, non-profit and public sectors alike. Currently, as the Equity and Inclusion Manager for Portland Parks and Recreation, he is responsible for developing culturally responsive programs and activities for communities of color, the immigrant and refugee communities as well as those living with disabilities. His engaging style and common-sense approach to these sensitive topics make his workshops relatable for everyone.
