COACHING for CONSULTANTS
Larry Ferguson

Overview

Not surprisingly, Coaching is HOT today! Many companies and organizations are increasingly turning to coaching as a tool for developing the skills and talents of their workforce. In some cases, this means supervisors and managers assume a greater role as coaches. In other cases, it involves hiring external coaches to work directly with high performing, high potential stars.

But, what about internal and external consultants who do not formally see or promote themselves as coaches? Is coaching an appropriate tool for consultants?

For many of us without formal training or experience as coaches, a host of questions and challenges can arise as consultants:

1. What are the differences between coaching and consulting?
2. Is it OK to coach when you’re not a coach?
3. What skills are needed to be successful when coaching?
4. How should I handle “push back” when coaching others?
5. What are the most important issues and limits I need to be aware of when to coaching as a consultant?

To offer a real world perspective on this topic, our March presenter, Larry Ferguson, will be joined by a local manufacturing manager who has no formal training as a coach -- but regularly utilizes coaching in various situations. Together, they will address these questions as well as explore the benefits and limits of coaching for consultants. After their presentations, ODN members and guests will be have an opportunity to ask to their own questions or offer comments / observations.
