[Return to ODN Oregon Meeting Calendar]
March 6, 2008
NOTE: This is a special joint program with the Cascadia Chapter of ASTD. Please note content, dates, time, location, costs, etc as this is NOT the monthly ODN program.
Overview
For some time we have been planning a joint program between ASTD and ODN. The regular ODN program on February 13th will be a prelude to this joint event. You do not need to attend both programs, but you will get more value if you do, since the Performance Consulting model introduced on February 13th will be the basis for the March 6th workshop.
February 13th ODN: Linking OD / Training to Organization Performance
This program introduces the Performance Consulting model and looks at the first component of identifying performance gaps.
March 6th Joint ODN/ASTD event: When Training is Not the Answer: Non-Training Performance Interventions
This program moves to the second component of the Performance Consulting model, and overviews the range of performance interventions that consultant may select from in order to address performance gaps. It will be especially valuable to have a strong representation from our ODN membership as OD consultants typically draw on a much broader range of interventions in our organizational work. Your expertise in many of these will be tapped during this program, and resource connections will be made to pave the way for future consulting and partnering opportunities.
Goals
• Understand that your role is to improve organizational performance
– not deliver training.
• Use a human performance model to explain your work around improving organizational
performance.
• Explain 30+ non-training interventions that might be useful to close a performance
gap.
Click here for a list of the various non-training interventions. Interventions #12 - 16 are considered "training" interventions and are NOT part of the presentation.
Agenda
Welcome, Hook, Objectives/Agenda
Your role as a Performance Consultant
The HPI Performance Model
Performance Interventions
While OD professionals typically view training as just one tool in their organizational toolkit, our peers in ASTD have been undergoing a metamorphosis to expand their roles from that of “trainers” to “Performance Consultants.”
Over a decade ago ASTD National launched the Human Performance Improvement (HPI) certificate program and began teaching a five course curriculum to encourage this transformation. Still many trainers (and some OD consultants) fall into the trap of applying training Band-Aids as the solution even when other performance interventions are probably more appropriate. Perhaps the old adage applies: When all you have is a hammer, everything you see looks like a nail. If training is the only tool in our arsenal, no wonder we so frequently return to it as the solution.
Expand your horizons and build your network at this special joint ASTD/ODN program. You’ll learn to use a Human Performance Model to explain the essentials to improve organizational performance; and then explore more than 30 non-training interventions that might be useful to close performance gaps. While this program does not aim to make you an expert in any of these possible interventions, it does promise to give you a broad awareness of the many options available and to link you with resources you may wish to call upon in order to address future organizational performance issues.
ASTD – The American Society for Training and Development, Cascadia chapter serves over 600 training and development professionals in Oregon and SW Washington.
Presenter / Facilitator
Dan Vetter, President of Vetter Solutions, and long-time member of both ASTD and ODN will facilitate this program. Dan’s personal mission is to make people (including businesses and organizations) successful. He humorously refers to himself as the Organizational Chiropractor, because he seeks to eliminate the pain organizations experience from misalignment.
For twelve years Dan worked inside a Fortune 500 company where he facilitated workshops for thousands of participants on topics including: leadership, communication, business presentations, customer service, teamwork, process improvement, and quality. In 1994 he founded VETTER SOLUTIONS, and began sharing his success strategies with clients locally and nationally.
Dan was the 2004 President for the American Society for Training and Development-- Cascadia Chapter. He is actively involved in Oregon Organizational Development Network, and is leading their pro-bono Community Consulting Program. Additionally, he serves as an adjunct faculty member for Portland State University, Bellevue University, and Drake University, facilitating programs in the areas of Quality, Human Performance Improvement, and Training.
Dan was a pilot trainer for ASTD National’s Human Performance Improvement (HPI) Certification Program in the mid 1990’s, and has since lead numerous training programs for professional trainer/consultants on Performance Consulting. At his two-day HPI workshop offered in 2007, this topic – Training Interventions – was a favorite topic, and one that participants wished to further explore. Here is that chance! Dan brings his 25 year background in training, quality, process improvement, and OD to this topic, along with excellent facilitation skills that promise to make this program engaging and worthwhile.
