Sustainability: The Next Wave

January 12, 2005
Jeanne Longley, PhD
Gary Langenwalter, MBA, MTS

Overview

Expanding on the November presentation on the future, what are our underlying assumptions for people, profit and planet? Jeanne Longley and Gary Langenwalter of the Zero Waste Alliance have been applying their histories of O.D. and manufacturing consulting to the field of Sustainability. They will lead a dialog on our underlying assumptions for the future and the implications for organizational health.

What is sustainability? Is it important? How does it impact my company? How does it impact OD? Join us for a spirited discussion that might change how you make your decisions, and how you help your company or clients prosper and thrive.

Sustainability examines and questions our society’s underlying assumptions and values. We can then project future scenarios for our companies and our own lives. Companies that have implemented sustainability programs have experienced a win/win/win/win: 1) substantially increased employee creativity, commitment, and morale, 2) increased community well-being, 3) increased environmental stewardship, and 4) increased profits and return to the shareholders.

Speaker

Jeanne Longley, PhD, is past chair of the Oregon ODN. She has been an OD consultant for 30 years with an emphasis on Work Process Redesign. She has recently shifted her focus to the triple bottom line and is a Program Manager with the Zero Waste Alliance. Gary Langenwalter, MBA, MTS, has served numerous clients in implementing Lean manufacturing and new information systems. Those implementations demonstrated that new technologies and methodologies work well only when the people want them to. He has authored two books and has two more in the works, one on sustainability and one on Lean Accounting. A native Oregonian, he moved back home this fall after living in the Midwest and New England. He is delighted to be at the Zero Waste Alliance, where he can fully express his passion for people and the environment while he works. He earned his MBA from Michigan State.
