Improvisation:
A Tool for Building an "Ensemble Culture"

January 14, 2004
On Your Feet

Overview

If you have ever watched the hit TV show "Who's Line Is it Anyway?", you have seen a ensemble making up instant stories on the spot with no plan or script by simply listening, responding in the moment, and adding value to existing ideas. As trainers, managers, humans we are constantly improvising- clients needs change, the internal landscape shifts, the unexpected arrives. A team that is versed in improvisational practices is able to thrive under these difficult conditions by to thinking on their feet, flexing from an entrenched agenda, and communicating with clarity. This program will be a crash course in using improvisational tools to help the teams innovate, share knowledge, and respond to change skillfully. This is a hands on experience. We will be playing, moving, and using on-the-spot improvisational demonstrations to uncover high performance communication practices, and reveal a new vocabulary for creating "flow" where ideas build upon each other to create new possibilities.
